Community Development
Building on Strength
Responsiveness to community needs has been a hallmark of Impact’s activism for decades.
While focused on employment and jobs, Impact has brought an array of services to the community, stabilized blocks, developed parks, planted trees, fought blight, sponsored establishment of The First Philadelphia Charter School for Literacy, and developed a childcare center. It has strengthened community by organizing surviving businesses into three business associations, and working extensively with Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations and CDC’s across the city to advocate for policies and programs that benefit all of Philadelphia’s low and moderate income neighborhoods.
The Heart of Kensington Neighborhood Development Plan, and its five goals represent the keystone of Impact’s current community development work. Published after a year of community meetings, it includes a comprehensive set of strategies to improve the safety, stability, housing, and services in the 30,000-person target area centered on the Kensington and Allegheny crossroads and its transportation hub. Much of Impact’s work in housing, employment and training, and economic development reflects pursuit of the Plan’s many community improvement and empowerment goals.
Corporate and foundation support of the Heart of Kensington Plan has been gratifying, with heartfelt thanks going to ACE Insurance, CIGNA, Independence Blue Cross, The Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and the Wachovia Regional Foundation for their confidence in the vision and generous funding of the work.
