What do you do when you have a suburban manufacturing facility and limited access to workers?

What do you do when you are offered a decent paying suburban job that you can’t reach without a car?

For some, the answer is to call Impact AdVANtage. Created to bridge the transportation service gap between these job seekers and employers in Bucks or Montgomery County.

A fully integrated element of Impact’s Employment and Training services, the AdVANtage fleet runs six to seven days a week, covering off-hour shifts, and locations poorly served by public transit.

Funded by SEPTA, Impact’s fleet of 6 new vans helps low-income Philadelphia residents connect with suburban jobs. Impact also works with Lockheed Martin and several Philadelphia high schools, supporting access to Lockheed’s IT Apprenticeship Program. The three-year program has worked since 2002, training talented young minority group students in computer and technical skills. Program graduates are offered full time jobs and tuition assistance that helps them keep learning and growing in their careers

At 4 A.M. there aren’t any buses or trains running, but nine men are grabbing cups of coffee as they board the Impact AdVANtage and head out to their jobs at Smithfield Packing in Souderton. In a year or two, many will be able to buy cars. Some will take advantage of Impact’s Family Saving Account program which will match their savings on a dollar for dollar basis. Until then, there is the Impact AdVANtage, bridging the gap between need and opportunity.
