From the Streets to Self-Sufficiency

Helping homeless and disadvantaged veterans reclaim their lives and self-sufficiency became part of Impact’s work in 1993 when it was awarded Philadelphia’s first Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program grant from US Department of Labor.

Responsiveness to homeless veterans’ many needs characterizes Impact’s work, and is evidenced by the comprehensive range of its programs, and its lists of service “firsts” (pdf) and “innovations” (pdf).

Providing stable, safe housing to veterans from Philadelphia’s shelters and early Detox programs, its Supportive Housing programs provide a complete continuum of care for veterans in the early and middle stages of recovery who are poised to recapture their self-sufficiency.

It’s Employment Programs assist unemployed and underemployed veterans prepare for work and find employment.

Besides homeless and chronically unemployed veterans, Impact has tackled the special problems faced by female, ex-offender, and dually diagnosed veterans.

A Dual Diagnosis Program (DDX), started in 2004, acknowledges the significant long-term needs of veterans struggling with both mental illness and substance abuse.

Complementing these programs is Impact’s unique set of outreach and transportation services. Beside a van program that links many area shelters and services to Impact’s housing programs, its Regional Outreach Service serves specialized VA medical centers in six states, assuring that Philadelphia’s needy veterans can access all the services available to them.

Impact is determined to remain responsive to the changing needs of veterans returning from today’s combat arenas, where high rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Poly-Traumas are likely to create new service challenges.

Our goal remains constant – to help those who served our country return to the community as self-sufficient and productive members of society.
