Veterans Services
Employment Programs
Employment is the bedrock of personal and family self- sufficiency. As a special part of Impact’s broader Employment And Training work, Veterans Services aims to help every qualified veteran capable of returning to the workforce to do so.
The Department of Labor funded Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) has been the core of Impact’s employment services for homeless veterans since 1993, when Impact received the first such grant ever awarded in Philadelphia. Qualified veterans receive core job search and placement services, skills assessment, use of CareerLink resources, resume preparation, and interview scheduling in addition to medical, legal, financial, housing, family reunification assistance to overcome barriers to employment. Participants are drawn from Impact’s transitional housing programs and from veteran-serving partner and collaborating agencies, and from community outreach that attracts walk-ins to our 124 E. Indiana Avenue site, located near the intersection of Front and Allegheny Avenue.
Graduates from the HVRP fill a steady demand for workers in the following areas:
- Security
- Food Preparation
- Warehousing
- Production Assemblers
- Janitorial Services
Focusing on the expanding opportunities of Green Jobs, Impact has partnered with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to manage a Veterans Workforce Investment Program (VWIP) that seeks to place veterans into environmentally-friendly jobs. A special emphasis for recruiting will target recently-separated men and women from the US military and the PA National Guard. The initial phase of the program will provide Weatherization Installer training to veterans who can then work in the industry that is now receiving significant funding to upgrade the energy efficiency of thousands of buildings throughout the state.
To better understand what it takes to help vets stay in their jobs, Impact has obtained a grant from Oak Philanthropy, Ltd to track veterans for up to 2 years after they have landed a job. The objective is to provide motivation, information, support and intervention to overcome obstacles that could result in loss of employment and personal stability.
Impact is always working to expand the pool of employers interested in hiring America’s vets. If you know a company with openings for full time positions with benefits, please contact us.
